Look out for opportunities to use your English.  If you see a number plate with some letters, say them in English. If you see a billboard with English words, an advertisement in a magazine,  or sub-titles on TV, say the words you see. This will help to keep your vocabulary alive and help to build your confidence as a speaker of English.

Tips for Learning English No.4 What’s happening?   Leave a comment

You don’t need to understand every word in a conversation to understand the situation and know how to respond politely.  Ask yourself What’s happening? We often use similar words in the similar situations (asking for directions, ordering food, asking if a seat is free).  Guessing will also help to ‘activate’ your English vocabulary and help you to remember words you have seen or heard before.

Tips for Learning English No.3 Keep an English notebook   Leave a comment

Write down new words in a notebook.  Next to the word write a sentence with the word.  This will help to you to remember how to use the word correctly in English.  You can also make a note of the part of speech (verb, noun, adjective etc).  If the word is a noun, you can draw a picture to help you remember the meaning.

Tips for Learning English 2. Use an English-English dictionary   Leave a comment

Using an English-English dictionary will help you understand the meaning of English words without translating every time you see a word in English.  You can buy an English-English dictionary which matches your own level of English, with meanings you can understand. An English-English dictionary will help you learn how to explain in English. Many English-English dictionaries give you lots of extra useful information, including examples of how to use a word in a sentence.
